Game One: Monroe University 7, USC Sumter 6
USC Sumter suffered a tough 7-6 loss in the opening game against Monroe University scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning.
Monroe struck first in the opening inning, but USC Sumter responded with a four-run bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead. RBI singles from Whitney McElveen and Kaitlyn Anderson, along with productive outs and a Monroe error, fueled the early surge.
USC Sumter extended its lead to 5-2 in the second inning before Monroe battled back, reclaiming the lead in the fourth with runs scored on a passed ball and a ground out.
Trailing late, USC Sumter tied the game at six in the bottom of the sixth when Anabel Ramirez singled down the right field line. However, Monroe regained the lead in the seventh after Reese Surratt scored on a sacrifice play.
Abigail McManus went the distance in the circle for USC Sumter, allowing seven runs (four earned) while striking out four. Offensively, McElveen and McManus each collected two hits, while Anderson, McElveen, and Ramirez drove in runs. Sienna Levy reached base three times via walk and added two bases as USC Sumter totaled nine walks and three stolen bases in the game.
Game Two: Monroe University 10, USC Sumter 0
Monroe University used a six-run first inning to control the second game, earning a 10-0 victory.
The Mustangs sent 11 batters to the plate in the opening inning, scoring six runs on a combination of hits, defensive miscues, and aggressive baserunning. Monroe added two runs in the second and one more in the third to extend the lead.
Emma Wargel took the loss for USC Sumter, pitching five innings. Monroe starter Jaleila Aupont was dominant in the circle, throwing a complete-game shutout while striking out 10 and allowing just one walk.
Monroe's lineup was led by Richeilys Rodriguez, Veronika Anderson, and Gabriella Pugliese, who combined for multiple RBIs, while the Mustangs added three stolen bases in the win.
USC Sumter will look to regroup as they continue play this week, taking on East Georgia State College Friday, February 13th at 12 PM & 2 PM.
